BY THE NUMBERS
Medicare in Utah County by the numbers
The second biggest Medicare county in Utah
Utah County is known as a young, growing place. But it also has a large and growing Medicare community. According to CMS, 72,367 Utah County residents had Medicare in June 2026. Only Salt Lake County had more. That’s about 15% of Utah’s 490,235 Medicare enrollees. (CMS Medicare Monthly Enrollment)
Growing faster than most
The county’s Medicare count is up about 24% from the 2020 yearly average of 58,354. That’s faster growth than Salt Lake County saw over the same time. Census Bureau estimates show Utah County residents age 65 and older grew from about 51,000 in mid-2020 to about 61,000 in mid-2024. (U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates)
Not everyone on Medicare is 65
CMS data shows about 7,000 Utah County Medicare enrollees qualify because of a disability, not age. And about 58% of the county’s enrollees were in Medicare Advantage or other health plans in June 2026. The rest had Original Medicare. Both paths are common here, which is why it helps to understand them before you choose.
TURNING 65
Turning 65 in Provo, Orem or Lehi: your first steps
Step 1: Know your sign-up window
Your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months long. It starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. Signing up early in that window helps your coverage start without a gap. (Medicare.gov – When does Medicare coverage start?)
Step 2: Find out if you'll be signed up automatically
If you already get Social Security benefits, you’ll usually be enrolled in Part A and Part B automatically and get your card in the mail. If not, you sign up through Social Security, online or by phone. (Medicare.gov – How do I sign up?)
Step 3: Check your job-based coverage
Many people in Lehi, American Fork and across the county keep working past 65. If you have coverage from a current job, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty. You then generally get an 8-month Special Enrollment Period after the job or coverage ends, whichever comes first. COBRA and retiree coverage don’t count as coverage from current work. (Medicare.gov – When does Medicare coverage start?)
Step 4: Make a list
Write down your doctors, the medicines you take with doses, and your pharmacy. This list is the start of any good Medicare decision.
Step 5: Compare your choices, then decide
Use Medicare.gov’s plan finder, talk with SHIP, or talk with a licensed agent. Take your time.
YOUR CHOICES
Medicare Provo Utah basics: your choices in plain words
Two main paths
Medicare gives you two main ways to get coverage. (Medicare.gov – Your Medicare coverage choices)
- Original Medicare is Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical). You can add a separate Part D drug plan, and you may add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help with costs Original Medicare doesn’t cover.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private companies approved by Medicare. It bundles Part A and Part B, and most plans include drug coverage.
Learn more about how Medicare Advantage works, Medicare Supplement plans in Utah, and Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement.
Why your county matters
Medicare Advantage and drug plans are offered in specific service areas. The plans available in Utah County may not match what a friend in another county or state has. If you move into or out of the county, you may get a Special Enrollment Period to change plans. (Medicare.gov – Special Enrollment Periods)
Check your doctors and hospitals
Before you choose, check that the doctors, clinics and hospitals you use in Provo, Orem, Spanish Fork or wherever you live work with the coverage you’re looking at. Ask the doctor’s office, and confirm with the plan.
